Oasis: Two Seventy-One thru Two Eighty-One

Friday, April 8th

271) Completion- Many, many months back a gentleman I was talking to in the Commissary encouraged me to read a couple of Proverbs to our daughter every night before she went to bed. He said that if we continued this practice throughout her childhood years, it would have a lasting affect on her character. He vouched for it, as he had done the same for his three or four children and witnessed the affect on their character development. I mentioned it to Drew, and we began the practice shortly thereafter. Tonight, we finished our first reading of Proverbs. I am excited to start again tomorrow night. There are such wonderful pieces of knowledge, not only for our daughter but also for us, and I believe it has been a beautiful, blessed tradition for our family already. "Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed." Proverbs 3:13-18


Saturday, April 9th

272) Family Time- I thought today was going to be the beginning of weeks where we would have the chance to be a family of three and, oh- how I have been looking forward to that time. There are so many aspects that are missing when Drew is gone, and because of his "in and out" schedule these past few months, we have never been able to really settle down into any kind of routine to help us cope well with life apart. Life has been too much "in flux." However, it doesn't look like my dreams for a lengthier time for our family of three is about to begin, at least not just yet. It has been postponed. It's hard to handle. Some tears were shed as I dealt with the disappointment, but in the end, I am thankful for every day we have had and continue to have together. There are so many who are dealing with the absence and fears connected to a deployment and what I face is nothing in comparison. I am blessed when I remember how precious each moment together is- even if our time has been cut short.


Sunday, April 10th

273) Good analogies/illustrations- When teaching or learning, a good analogy or illustration can really help explain your point while helping others remember that point. Jesus recognized this. We call his illustrations and analogies "parables." Today our minister had several good illustrations. One was about how attending church is important to a Christian.

He started out by stating, "You aren't a Christian just because you go to church, just like you aren't a car just because you stand in a garage." (and from here I paraphrase.) But does that mean there is no value in going to church regularly? Is a car still a car if there is no gas in the tank? We would all agree that it is. However, does a car with no gas in its tank have any power? Does it have the ability to serve its expected purpose? The answer is an emphatic no to both. The same is true for a Christian who does not regularly attend church. You will eventually run on empty and without the necessary power from above, you will become ineffective in your God-given purpose.

Isn't it interesting how easily we all relate to the idea of a car without gas? We all understand the ineffectiveness and lack of power that exists in such a situation, but how many of us had thought or were willing to apply that to our own lives on those mornings when getting up for church just wasn't what we really wanted to do? Good Biblical teaching stretches you; it doesn't necessarily tell you what you want to hear, but it does tell you what you need to hear, and with good illustrations and analogies, hopefully, we remember more.


Monday, April 11th

274) Bills- Every month I sit down to pay our bills two times during the month. Today was one of those times.  As I sat down to pay the bills, I was so grateful that there was no stress involved with the process. I did not have to worry about contingency plans or consider how I would stretch our remaining dollars to help cover our every day expenses because Drew will be paid in full and on time.

While that was a blessing to me, it is not the real reason I consider my bills a blessing today. As I looked through the bills, I saw several that show our outstanding debt- almost all relate to our college education. I love watching the amount we owe go down and I am looking forward to the day I can say we have paid off that debt. Those debts reminded me of another- one which is far greater in size, beyond anything we could measure, and one I could never pay off no matter how hard I try. "You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:6-8 God loved me and paid my debt of sin long before I ever considered offering Him the smallest bit of my affections. Only He could do what was needed to cover all that I have done and all that I continue to do along the way, and only through His payment and sacrifice have I found freedom from those sins and the guilt and shame that can go with them.

275) Assurance- Just recently a good friend of my family's, and a wonderful Christian woman, lost her battle with cancer and went home to be with our Lord. It is hard to think that this world is no longer blessed with her sweet spirit or kind words, but I am so grateful for the amazing life she lived- the incredible faith she displayed every day. Her faith was a blessing to everyone who knew her, not only as an example but also as an assurance that today she is resting and rejoicing in heaven. Today, can you and those around you honestly and confidently say, "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh what a foretaste of glory divine!"? Because let me tell you, there is no greater blessing for you or your friends and families than the blessed assurance that you are forever in the hands of God. As I sit here right now, it is my personal prayer for you.


Tuesday, April 12th

276) Tried and true tricks- As our daughter gets older, her learning curve is growing at an accelerated rate and with that, she is figuring out my redirecting and disciplining techniques. Sadly that means fewer of them are having an effect and I need to be more and more creative. So when a oldie still works, what a wonderful feeling. Today I tried a truly old trick (well as old as they come for a child that is only twenty-two months old), one I have been using on our little girl since we made road trips between Redstone Arsenal and my parents house (back when our daughter was less than two months old). It's primary purpose was to help me drown out her crying and/or screaming when nothing else worked and I just needed to push through and make it to our next stop. Twenty months later, it still works. Yippee!


Wednesday, April 13th

277) "Bloom Where You're Planted"- When I was growing up, I attended the yearly Mother-Daughter Banquet at our church with my mother, sisters, grandma, aunt and cousins. I must admit though that I don't remember much about what was said by the speaker, except one year. That year my grandmother spoke and I remember she talked about blooming where you're planted. That thought has come back to me often over the years- whenever I felt like throwing a pity-party because I was not perfectly happy with my circumstances. I have been placed where I am for a reason and it is up to me to bloom where I am planted. The thought has returned to me again this week- not because I am unhappy here in Albuquerque as a whole. It is something a little closer to home, but no matter what the setting or reason, I need to remember to bloom where I am planted. That is my plan as I move forward from today. Thank God for each day He has given me, in this place He has placed me, and make the most of the time I am given.


Thursday, April 14th

278) Protection- It's amazing how quickly a day can completely change directions- from a simple day of running errands to a fender bender. It's not the first time I've been involved in a car accident; it's not the first time I've been rear-ended, but it is the first time since our daughter was born. Funny how differently you look at things once your life is not the only one involved, especially since she was closer to the incident than I was. (I was rear-ended, not vice-versa.) There are times when we have discussed owning small vehicles like the Smart cars because of their high gas mileage. Of course we have always turned it down as a viable option because there is no place for a car seat in a Smart car, but it's at a time like this that I am thankful for the extra protection and cushion of the large trunk that we have on our vehicle. Even more so, I am thankful for the constant and continual presence of our Heavenly Father. Even if we had a Smart car or some other tiny-trunked car, his presence is really where my comfort lies. He is the one who watches over us every step we take, each turn on every errand, every road trip and every flight, and every time we lay down to sleep."Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6


Friday, April 15th

279) Substitution- While I was in school, I remember it always seemed like kids would be excited if they heard we had a substitute teacher. Either that meant the workload would be very lighter or we could count on something different and interesting; whichever it was, we were happy. Lately I have embraced the idea of substitution when it comes to recipes, both to accommodate our daughter's allergies and Drew's palate. Again, substitution has been a boon, allowing us to continue to enjoy a wide variety of foods without giving up much flavor all the while not endangering health or gag reflexes. But the greatest of all substitutions occurred centuries ago. It is something many of us celebrate on a yearly basis and we are approaching that time once again. In fact one week from now, many people will have a day off from work for Good Friday. What makes that day so good? The answer is quite simple- the greatest substitution, and thereby the greatest blessing ever, is celebrated on that day. "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:21; "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness;by his wounds you have been healed." 2 Peter 2:24 With that substitution Good definitively and irrevocably defeated evil and the grave! Praise the Lord- what a glorious blessing!


Saturday, April 16th

280) Design- Lately as I have been experiencing additional soreness and pain from the accident and watched as others in our house have been sick, I have thought about the beauty in the design of our bodies. Most of the time, the design works so seamlessly we do not even think about all the systems and intricate interactions that must work together so we have the energy to function and can go about our days without pain and in good health. Of course many of us experience frequent pain or deal with illnesses because of something that isn't working correctly within the original design; from something as simple as a bacteria or virus to an uncontrolled growth of an abnormal cell (cancer) or the suppression of our immune system, all are changes to God's original and perfect design for our bodies. This may seem like a flaw, but there is beauty even in the face of these often devastating circumstances. Thanks to the Lord's beautiful and wonderful design for us, scientists and doctors know what to expect from our bodies, so when something isn't working the right way, they can find treatments, medications and look for cures for otherwise debilitating or even life-threatening situations. While God may not have saved us from the repercussions of a fallen world, He did provide us with a beautiful means to continue to thrive and understand that world instead of living in chaos, and that is a blessing.


Sunday, April 17th

281) Our patio- Now that spring is here, I have wanted to get out more and enjoy the warmer weather, but in Albuquerque, spring weather also means unpredictable, insane winds. Every time I have ventured out to the park with our daughter, we have come home beaten up by the winds and sand. For the past couple of weeks, our little girl and I have take advantage of our walled in patio each afternoon and I am loving it! By late afternoon, a majority of the area is shaded from the sun- which is perfect for our very pale skin- the weather is beautiful, and we can still enjoy a light breeze. Our daughter gets to play outside, dig in some dirt and explore the plants that we have in the area. She loves it and I find the time peaceful and relaxing. It has really become our little "metropolitan oasis."

God Never Shuts Down- Two Fifty-Two thru Two Seventy

Monday, March 21st

252) Pita bread- Crackers and breads are the one food group where we have struggled to find any acceptable options at the store for our daughter to eat given her food allergies. Nearly everything that you would purchase in the store includes one or more of the allergens or is not what I consider a reasonable price. Because of this I began to make homemade biscuits which our daughter loves to eat with jelly. Still, she will tire of biscuits all the time while still wanting to eat peanut and jelly, so when I found that pita bread does not include soy or dairy in its ingredients, I knew it would be a wonderful addition to our daughter's diet. She has enjoyed the additional variety and loves a slice of pita bread with jelly. Yum!


Tuesday, March 22st

253) Conviction- I received an e-mail from my Grandma today and while the contents were vastly important, that is not what I am sharing here. After reading through her e-mail, I could feel my Grandma's conviction and this is not the first time. I could feel how strongly she felt everything she said and that is what made it all the more powerful. This is also true with others who have had a strong impact on my life. I can see conviction in their actions and hear it in their words. Maybe when I feel as though I am being ineffective, it is because people do not see or feel the conviction in me. Conviction can be a powerful and effective tool and I have been blessed to be surrounded by people who hold some very strong, eternal convictions.

254) Floor Rugs- I have always appreciated floor rugs for the added warmth they provide to hardwood and tiled floors, but today I also realized they make cleaning up all the crumbs and tidbits left behind by a toddler much easier as well.


Thursday, March 24th

255) Intimacy- You can talk with another person on a very regular basis and still not have that close, intimate relationship based on trust and love. I have been struggling with something internally for which I am not extremely proud, and it is hard to admit, even to myself. So when I was able to talk with Drew about it and honestly admit what was going on inside of me, I cherished the depth and solidity of our relationship all the more.


Friday, March 25th

256) Power hours, 30% off, cash back savings- Some of you may already know what store I am alluding to, but for those of you who don't, this is a little nod to Kohl's. Thanks to Kohl's and their power hours, 30% off coupons, cash back savings all stacked on top of each other, we have been able to purchase proper work attire for Drew throughout our marriage. He has very particular tastes when it comes to his clothing which makes it nearly impossible for me to buy items for him if he isn't there to voice his opinion, but he still wants to get in, find what he needs and get out. Salvation Army shopping just isn't in his blood. So when he is in need of some new work clothes, I am always thankful for the multiple discounts we can get at Kohl's, and it is always great to see that you saved more than twice the amount you spent.


Saturday, March 26th

257) Trees in bloom- There is something wonderful about springtime. I do believe it is my favorite season. (I think I have said something similar about fall and honestly they are nearly even. I love them both so much.) Spring brings such a renewal and as I looked at so many trees in bloom today, I couldn't help but remember just how drab, dreary and dead everything had looked just a few short weeks ago. Each spring I am reminded through the blossoming trees and flowers that even when things seem to be dead or lost forever, something beautiful can come from it. If God set this in motion for the trees and flowers of the field, how much more so does He do this in the lives of those who live in His will?

258) Mommy-daughter activities- Whether it's baking brownies, helping with the laundry, planting vegetables, making the beds, dancing in the hall, working on her shapes and colors or playing with play-doh and bubbles, I cherish our mommy-daughter moments. I feel so blessed to be able to stay home with our daughter and love the time we share together.


Monday, March 28th

259) My high school cleaning job- When I took the job cleaning professional offices in the evenings, I did it out of necessity, and I honestly didn't think I would enjoy it. I mean, it was cleaning. However I found the work quite rewarding and I absolutely loved my co-workers. Besides the fact that the cleaning job helped to fund my college education, it also left me with a wonderful appreciation for a clean house. I cannot clean my house without admiring the shine or sparkle of a faucet or glass door all the while recognizing it comes from that summer. Since we continue to rent, this has been most beneficial - and a blessing- as we have always desired to leave the house in the same condition it was given to us (minus those items which naturally come from living in a place like nail holes for your pictures).


Tuesday, March 29th

260) Seeing the two-way street- I was running errands in town today during which a lady confronted me about something I had done that displeased her. It was not done intentionally, and upon recognizing what had happened, I apologized and did my best to quickly right the situation. However the entire time I was apologizing and trying to amend the problem, this woman continued to harass me and make comments about how rude and inconsiderate I was. I walked away from the situation feeling slightly injured. I knew and had admitted I had erred, but that had not been enough for her. I was frustrated and a little irritated that she didn't consider or take into account the obvious circumstances that led to my error nor accepted my apologies, etc. Before I could get much further in my thought process, I reminded myself of something very important. I do not know this woman and I have no idea what is going on in her life. Instead of making assumptions about her character based on this one fleeting interaction, I recalled that we all are dealing with issues- big and small- and often they affect how we interact with people. Just as I wished she had recognized the situations that led to my mistake, I needed to recognize that there could be several reasons for her reaction beyond what I could readily see. Whether that was the case this time or not, I am thankful that I was reminded that in each interaction and relationship we have, it is a two-way street and considerate and generous thoughts are never wasted.


Wednesday, March 30th

261) Basic Sewing Skills- With my basic sewing skills, I have been able to mend clothing, do basic tailoring, make some clothing for our daughter and myself, create personalized items for our daughter's bedroom and create personalized gifts. They provide me with an outlet for my creativity and are a money-saver.


Thursday, March 31st

262) Unexpected headache relief- For the past few weeks, I have had a persistent, unrelenting headache that has varied from severe pain to a full blown migraine. With the change in weather, things have only worsened. On top of the normal pain and side effects, I have added new rather brain-numbing side effects. We have survived fairly well despite all, but last night when our daughter was up with a stomach bug, I feared the worse. Already having an intense headache, I did not need to face a day on four or five hours of sleep. I wasn't certain how I would function let alone care for a sick child. So I took medicine first thing this morning and wished for greater relief than I have had in the past weeks, and despite all odds and expectations after years of experience with migraines, I went several hours without either pain or side effects.


Friday, April 1st

263) Sweetness- This morning I woke up with the stomach bug that our daughter has had the past few days, and I must say- forgive me if this is too explicit for some- I prefer almost anything to throwing up. I hate it and always have. Not even all my months of morning sickness made me more tolerant and now I was going to face it alone with a toddler who was still recovering herself. It just didn't sound like a good situation. Our little girl blessed me in so many ways this day. Every time I began to get really sick, she would run for a towel or Kleenex because she remembered that I had always wiped her face after she threw up just the day before, and throughout the day, she was an even bigger helper than normal. She ran dishes into our kitchen and managed to get them into the sink and did this without being asked. All this from a child who isn't even two. She gave me kisses and hugs and did all she knew to help me feel better. It's moments like that when you see the sweet, sweet spirit of your child that you can feel truly blessed.

264) Free mobile to mobile minutes- The morning was rough. I felt so terrible and time seemed to move slower than a crawl. I called my Mom thinking we would talk for a short time and when she found out what our situation was, she ended up talking with me for much longer just to keep me company. If it wasn't for the fact that we have same provider, we probably wouldn't have been able to do that as minutes would have been too costly, but I am so grateful for those free mobile to mobile minutes within our provider. They were quite a blessing for me today.


Saturday, April 2nd

265) Rest- Sometimes it is hard for me to just rest; I feel like there is always something I should be doing. Today however, rest was greatly needed. I am still not feeling 100% and I know that there is a little girl who is going to need me to be on my toes. My aunt and uncle offered to watch our daughter for the day so I could truly rest and it blessed me so much- physically and emotionally.


Sunday, April 3rd

266) Letting go- I'm a planner; Drew would probably say that was an understatement. The truth is I am highly organized and I like to know what is going to happen in advance as much as possible so I can be prepared for it. That is why I like to plan things out. We have been considering some possible changes for our family that would be fairly significant- nothing is definite and nothing must happen any time soon, but I think it is something we would both like to see happen sometime in the upcoming months. I am the one who has been doing the necessary research, but in the process, I have gotten wrapped up in the idea that it had to be done ASAP- the first possible chance we had- when that really isn't the case.  Because of that mindset, I have allowed some anxiety to creep in as it doesn't seem like the plans are gelling. Today I remembered two important things: (1) We don't have to do anything right away and things will happen at the right time- God's time. (2) When I let go and let God take control, things always work out for the better.

Monday, April 4th

267) Refining- I heard someone make a comment on the radio today about the refinement of character and that really got me thinking. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary "refine" is defined as follows:

transitive verb 1) to free (as metal, sugar, or oil) from impurities or unwanted material; 2) to free from moral imperfection; 3)to improve or perfect by pruning or polishing; 4) to reduce in vigor or intensity; 5) to free from what is coarse, vulgar, or uncouth intransitive verb 1) to become pure or perfected; 2) to make improvement by introducing subtleties or distinctions

Our society and world seems to place refinement of high value, but what items do they want refined? How much is spent on the refining of manners (ie. finishing schools) or the refining of ore, minerals, metals, and petroleum? In the end, we consider each of those items more precious because they have been refined. How much more precious would be a refined character and spirit, yet how much time, effort and expense do I give toward that end? The process does not claim to be easy- neither without toil nor without pain- but the end result offers much blessing. "In the whole land,” declares the LORD, “two-thirds will be struck down and perish; yet one-third will be left in it. This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,' and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’” Zechariah 13:8-9


Tuesday, April 5th

268) Creative Solutions- Dressing our daughter has proved more challenging in these earlier, cooler spring months. Right now her waist is somewhere between size 12 month and 18 month (depending on the brand) but she absolutely needs size 24 months for the length in her pants. Originally I thought we could just use the true adjustable waist pants and that would work, but because of how much we need to cinch them in at the waist, they haven't really worked out like I thought. I have found some options that worked, but like I said earlier, it has been more of a challenge to find the right fit. As we begin to see the first weeks of warmer days and our daughter is beginning to wear capris, etc., I am seeing a wonderful creative solution to this dilemma. When it comes to shorts and skirts, the issue of length becomes more of a non-issue which means I can focus on getting clothes that fit her in the waist. For those colder days, we can always use thicker tights. TaDa! Not only will she be dressed in clothes that fit that are also appropriate for the weather, but she will also love what she is wearing.


Wednesday, April 6th

269) Salaried- I know I have said I am thankful for Drew's job, but beyond the fact that he has a job which provides for us, he also receives a regular, consistent amount each month. I never really thought about what a blessing that was until the last few weeks. With growing talks about possible government shutdowns (whether or not you believe it could actually happen), there has also been chatter about the possibility that military paychecks may be stopped (at least from the date of the shutdown until the government starts up again). These threats were originally mentioned by newspapers but have recently been stated by the White House administration. I'd be lying if I said it didn't have me thinking twice. As we wait to see what will happen in Washington DC and what Drew's next paycheck will look like, I am thankful that he typically receives a salary. I know many people are paid hourly wages, which can be so fickle and changing, and this is just a reminder of our daily, daily blessings.


Thursday, April 7th

270) Previous Tight Budgets- I have been keeping an eye on the goings-on in Washington DC today; I am not really anxious as we do have the means to cover expenses for a short while (another blessing right there) and I completely realize all of this shutdown drama may just dissipate if it was really more of a political ploy than a real deadlock. However as it could affect us, I am interested. I thought about what we would need to change should a shutdown occur and it lasted long enough that Drew's pay was affected-- and that took me back to memories of my first years in College Station. I am reminded of my first apartment, my pay-as-you-go electricity, the splurge of fast food once a month and my $10/month budget for all things entertainment. It wasn't the easiest time, but I grew so much through those months. Thanks to times like that, I also know that Drew and I would be able to tighten our belts and face more meager situations as well, so instead of it being my "poor" time, I was rich- rich indeed with family, friendship, faith, love and more.

Tuesday, March 15th

246) General overwhelming blessedness- Perhaps this seems a bit redundant calling my general feeling of blessedness as a blessing, but in the past few days I have had such an overwhelming sense of blessedness that I just could not ignore it as anything else. Recognizing how very blessed I am in my everyday, run-of-the-mill life has been an incredible blessing for me. My life may not be anything fabulous. Some might even think it was boring, but to me, it is perfect. The more I have counted my blessings, the more I have recognized the One who has blessed us, and that has brought me more joy than I could have ever imagined.


Wednesday, March 16th

247) Right decisions- In a society where traditional, conservative beliefs are often frowned upon and labeled as old-fashioned and narrow-minded, it is a blessing to see people recognize that there is power and joy in following the Lord's commands. So much so that when they see they are not in line with God's will, they will change their plans, without any delay, in order to get right with God.


Thursday, March 17th

248) Another day- There is so much uncertainty in this life and yet so often, we seem to take it for granted that we are not guaranteed another day. Movies like "The Bucket List" and songs like "Live Like You Were Dying" by Tim McGraw remind us that it is often not until old age or an unforeseen illness come upon us that we seriously look at our lives and recognize the blessing of each day and chose to live like each day is a gift. Friday, March 18th

249) Nurses in the family- You know I turn to my mother and my sister alot with questions and I am certain that to an extent that is absolutely normal given my relationship with them. However I also know that I ask my mom and sister lots of medical questions because they are nurses, and I really don't want to worry unnecessarily but I also don't want to ignore something that might need to be addressed immediately. I know there are other sources I would be able to turn to if it were not for their medical knowledge, but I am so grateful for their knowledge and expertise and am thankful that they never tire of answering my questions.


Saturday, March 19th

250) A little time, a big surprise- Drew came home four hours earlier than I expected. Four hours may not sound like much but after all the time apart that we have just faced and looking at only about twenty four hours together, four hours suddenly becomes a huge amount of time, and with that an incredible, indescribable blessing.


Sunday, March 20th

251) Perspective- Lately I have become far more aware of the amount of space we have in our home. I don't think it feels small; in fact I have always said it was the perfect size. There was just the right amount of space for the furniture we had and therefore I felt no need to buy anything when we moved. However as our daughter gets bigger, she is acquiring more, particularly when it comes to toys. These toys all seem to be bigger in size and there just isn't room for all of them. (At least not in the way I would prefer.) So maybe I'm beginning to feel things are a little cluttered. Then I see all of these commercials for who knows what product, but no matter what the product, the individual or family always lives in this incredible, spacious house. Believe me, I have noticed how spacious they make the houses, at least lately I have. Today though, I realized something. Those commercials are offering something empty because if the cameras were to pull back, you would see that the spacious houses they are depicting only has three walls- if that, and if they are lucky, it may have a ceiling. I have been blessed with four walls for every room in our house and a very solid and sturdy roof which keeps the rain and snow out. So even if our rooms are getting a little more cluttered thanks to our daughter's toys, that isn't so bad.

Good Foundations: Two Thirty-Five Through Two Forty-Five

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all -- how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died-- more than that, who was raised to life-- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Saturday, March 5th

235) Fear diminished- Most girls dream about their wedding and who they will marry, or so it seems. I never had too many opinions about my wedding until I actually had to plan it, but growing up, I did have one very particular opinion about the man I was going to marry (besides sharing my beliefs). I had no desire to marry a man in uniform (ie. police officer, firefighter, military), and my reasoning was very simple. I didn't want the worry and fears that went along with being the spouse of those brave men. Obviously my plans changed. However this is only because I realized that fears could not and should not dictate my life, and with the Lord's help, they generally don't. "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand." Isaiah 41:10 This applies to so much more than just Army life. God has strengthened me, supported me and helped me to step out on faith, without fear, so many times before, and I am certain that without Him I wouldn't have this wonderful, beautiful, fantastic life for which I am so grateful today- because I would have been too immobilized with fear somewhere along the way.

Sunday, March 6th

236) Choosing thankfulness- I could look at less than 72 hours as just a tease, reminding me of what I want more of but can't have at the moment, or I can be thankful for the time we have been given. Today I chose gratitude. It wasn't my first response and I must admit, it wasn't an easy choice. However I decided to do what I could with what I have been given instead of mourning something I cannot control or change. Even after two hundred and thirty-five blessings counted, gratitude does not always come naturally, but we always have the choice.


Monday, March 7th

237) Honesty with yourself- Sometimes you just have to admit your weaknesses and limitations, and sometimes the person who needs to hear them the most is yourself. Instead of walking away feeling defeated, I have always felt freer and relieved. Maybe I just expect too much from myself; I don't know, but a good dose of honesty never hurts.


Tuesday, March 8th


238) Doing the normal tasks- On days when you just have no desire to get out of bed but only want to pull the cover over your head and ignore what the day holds for you until tomorrow or the next day or even the next week (depending on the situation), the best thing you can do is get up and do the most basic and regular of your daily tasks. Don't aim for the stars. Take a shower; get dressed; go to the grocery store; dust; clean your floors; wash your dishes; take out the trash. It's amazing how a little of the ordinary can really help remind you that there is so much more out there, so much that you are capable of handling. "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you have entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" Matthew 25:22-23 Perhaps I am taking this a little out of context (I hope not), but I cannot help but think that there is nothing more basic that we have been entrusted with than the blessings of our family and home. If we are faithful in caring for those, perhaps we will be entrusted with even more for His kingdom, and that is a blessing indeed.


Wednesday, March 9th

239) She talks- ....and talks.... and talks..... and talks.... and talks..... and talks....... And for those of you who knew me as a toddler (and even now), you are probably thinking, "sounds like she takes after her mother." Yes, I know; our daughter takes after me. There are times, when she decides to choose one word or phrase and repeat it over and over for minutes on end, when I think I might go crazy, but I just remind myself how thankful I am that she is able to communicate with us so well already. This ability is something that I remember looking forward to when she was smaller and just cried and screamed when she needed or wanted something, and I am not about to be upset now that I got what I wished for. 


Thursday, March 10th

240) Regular Communication- Having good communication within a relationship is vital; so is regular communication. Over the years that I have known Drew, we have spent a fair share of time apart, both while we were dating and since we have been married. During those times of separation, we have been able to communicate in different ways to varying degrees. Take for instance the communication we had while he completed his Basics training for National Guard; his communication was almost completely restricted to written letters that I received about once every week. Whatever the means and regularity (a letter once a week, a phone call every night or every 3-4 nights), that regular contact and communication makes so much difference. Even if we only speak on the phone for five minutes and our conversation comprises little more than "Hi. How are you doing? Was it a good day? Anything interesting you can tell me about?" It's the most wonderful and stabilizing part of my week.


Friday, March 11th

241) Our Child's Understanding- When the full scope of our daughter's food allergies became clear, Drew and I were concerned about how she would deal with this if they lasted until she started going to parties or even school. There is no way she can eat the typical foods that most children eat or could share food at lunchtime, and we wondered how that might affect her or how many times she would come home with severe stomach and digestive problems because she decided to ignore or didn't realize there was something she shouldn't eat. In the end, we realized we could not shield her from those situations; even at home, it would be good for her to see that she does not always get to eat the same food as us, but the food she eats is yummy! So we started to explain that some food was her food and some food was Mommy/Daddy food and that Mommy/Daddy food would give her a bad owie in her belly. In the last week, she has started saying "owie" whenever I am eating, which just throws me for a loop because she hasn't fallen or done anything to get hurt. When she realizes I don't understand, she points to my food and says "owie eat," and I realized she is telling me that she cannot eat my food because it will give her an owie. Her allergies may not be life-threatening but knowing that she understands that concept so clearly that she can tell me without any prompting is so exciting and an incredible blessing to this mother.


Saturday, March 12th

242) Foundation on the Rock- I heard some news today, that if it were to come to fruition, could have some unpleasant affects on our family, and initially it shook me. I was upset at the thought of "what if?". Shortly thereafter though, I was reminded that our God is still in control, even if all that I heard and more does occur- God reigns. If I can trust and rely on that and I base everything on that foundation, I need not be shaken when I come upon scary, intimidating or disheartening circumstances (and they do seem to abound these days).  "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." Matthew 7:24-27


Sunday, March 13th

243) Daylight Savings- Usually the time change in the spring is the one I like the least, but I have been counting down the days this year. I wasn't disappointed when today came either. Our daughter wakes with the first early light, which means she is up before the true sunrise. She doesn't wake us up right away, for which I have been very thankful, but it means that over the past few weeks she has gotten very grumpy much earlier than normal and no amount of adjustments have corrected the situation properly. Today all was quiet until after 7 am. It was beautiful. Not only did she sleep later, but I could see the effects in her attitude all morning. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

244) A dark room- We have used a dark room as a tool when teaching our daughter how to sit still and be quiet during church services. However when we first started attending our church here in Albuquerque, I used the cry room that was provided; I quickly realized that didn't have the same effect and her training went backwards. Then we had to find a room that was (1) dark enough to make our daughter realize it was no fun to leave service and (2) not in use for children's worship during service. We finally located one a month or so ago, and I can tell you, the results have been nearly instantaneous. What a blessing!


Monday, March 14th

245) Our daughter's response to my headaches- When I was pregnant, one of my greatest worries was how would I handle taking proper care of an infant or a toddler and cope with the migraines that seem to plague me. Recently, our daughter has begun to answer the question for me in her own incredible way. I can tell her that mommy doesn't feel well and has an owie in her head, and she has responded so well. Her temperament, sweetness and comprehension have made the whole situation easier; something I would never have expected to have had with a child who is not even two yet.

212) Vacuum Cleaner- After watching my vacuum cleaner take all the dirt from the last three rooms and spit it out onto the most recent carpet and/or rug I was vacuuming week after week, I talked to Drew about purchasing a new vacuum cleaner. This time, I wanted to do the research, invest a little more than we had previously, and get one that would hopefully last us for several years. We made the purchase today and then returned home to vacuum all the carpets. What a great feeling to have clean floors again and how wonderful to have a husband who understands the importance of a decent vacuum cleaner to his slightly obsessive-compulsive, clean-freak wife.


Sunday, February 13th

213) Obedience-  This morning our sermon was on Submitting in Love- not only to our spouses, but also, and more importantly- for all else comes from this- submitting to God in and because of love. One of the verses that was mentioned and discussed was John 14:15-17a  “If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—  the Spirit of truth." (quoting) "If you love me, keep my (Jesus') commands." What a simple, straight-forward statement and yet, what a life-long challenge it is for us. It is a call to obedience out of love, is it not? As I thought about that verse, I recalled the times I chose independence, ease, personal pleasure, financial comfort, the "more accepted"/secular route, etc. over obedience to God's commands and leading in my life. In the end, it never worked out well. However when I trusted God and was obedient to His commands, I have never been let down. I am not saying that my obedience equals a life of wealth, prosperity and ease because that is not something we were ever promised in this world, but I have always been blessed and found joy in the end results, even the hard times. And so I am not surprised that quickly following on the heels of that Scripture, I found myself humming the song, Trust and Obey.  How truly appropriate - the words themselves a blessing to those who believe in Christ and follow His commands!

Monday, February 14th

214) Our daughter's prayers- Recently our little girl has wanted to say her own prayers before her nap and bedtime. They are simple and pure. She thanks God for whatever comes to her mind, from Mommy and Daddy, to dipping foods, toys, laundry and baths. I love to hear her prayers, to hear what she thinks of to thank God for each afternoon and evening and at the same time, it is a reminder to me of just how abundant our blessings are.


Tuesday, February 15th

215) Sleep- Being well-rested is such a blessing. It's amazing how even just going on one hour less than your body requires/desires can affect your energy levels, brain functioning, and emotions. I personally know that sleep is essential to ward off migraines and keep me on my toes in order to keep up with our toddler, and yet I am also aware that there are those who struggle with sleep on a much more regular basis than I- people who suffer from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia. I have known a few and I am only reminded all the more what a blessing each night of rest is in my life.


Wednesday, February 16th

216) Medicines- Ideally I prefer to deal with my migraines and other illnesses using as few medications as possible. However I am grateful that there are a multitude of medicinal options available to me, when I need them, so that I can function and be a good mother and wife and not just a sad sack.


Thursday, February 17th

217) Kissing owies- A month of two ago, I started to kiss our daughter's owies when she would fall or bump into something. She very quickly picked up on the gesture and has been returning the favor to me. I have struggled with headaches and migraines quite a bit since the new year began which means I have been telling our little girl that mommy's head has an owie. Without fail, she stops whatever she is doing, comes over and kisses my forehead. There is something so sweet, innocent and pure in her actions and you really can see that she has such faith within her that after that kiss my owie will be gone. It's beautiful to watch.


Friday, February 18th

218) An Assortment of Chicken Noodle Soups- For the past several days, I have been fighting off what I thought was just a head cold with a migraine thrown in just for fun. Last night things seemed to get a little worse and this morning I was down for the count. The smell of most foods has been turning my stomach and I have eaten very little except a few saltine crackers. This afternoon Drew came home with an assortment of chicken noodle soups, just for me. What a wonderful, sweet, loving gesture.


Saturday, February 19th

219) Breathing through my nose- I really don't think much about how I breath; it's just something I do. At night time though, breathing through my nose is wonderful. It keeps your lips from getting dried out and chapped as well as other uncomfortable side effects. Interesting how we don't think about these little functions until they are impaired, but I am thankful for all those little details that God planned out in advance that make our bodies work so well when they are healthy.


Sunday, February 20th

220) A four day weekend- I have been looking forward to this weekend as Drew had both Friday and Monday off for President's Day. It seems like he has been out of town for most of his holidays, so I was excited that he would be here for this one. Then not only was I sick this weekend, but our daughter ended up getting sick as well. Not much of a fun weekend for our family. However, I am very thankful that Drew had that four day weekend off. He has been so wonderful taking care of our daughter and me and allowing me to rest up so I can watch her when he returns to work. I have been so physically exhausted and unsteady from the illness that I cannot imagine how I would have made it through the past few days if he had not been here.


Monday, February 21st

221) Breathing, in general- Whatever I have had these past few days has settled into my lungs and I have had some crazy coughing fits. They have been severe enough that it has brought Drew running to check on me, and honestly a few have had me a little scared when my coughing has interrupted my breathing. I was always thankful when that next breath came. Breathing is such a natural, instinctual function for us, that the moment it becomes difficult, you are reminded just how fragile your life is and what a blessing every breath you take is.


Tuesday, February 22nd

222) Anticipation- When you are looking forward to an event of one kind or another, you become keenly aware of time. When I was younger, it seemed as though time just dragged by as I waited for the day, but as I have gotten older, I find that the anticipation of the event is exciting and helps the time pass. In fact, particularly when it comes to my family and when I will have the chance to visit with them again, I have become aware of the fact that even if the date is months off, just the knowledge and anticipation that I will be with them and see them again at such and such a time can make a world of difference.

223) A day long awaited- And with the culmination of the anticipation comes the excitement of the actual event.... my parents are in town!

224) A full house- I love having house guests. It really hasn't happened all that often, but I love it when they come, and tonight was especially fun. Not only were my parents with us, but my uncle, aunt and cousins came over. It is wonderful to watch my father with his brother and fun to watch our daughter toddle around after everyone. I love how laughter, joy and love filled the air.

225) Christ is enough- As humans I think we like to know why and how, and I believe we are raised to expect there to always be an answer. Often there is and I do enjoy researching and seeking the answers. However when it comes to some questions- such as how did the universe get here- no matter what you believe, you will have to take it on faith. It is because of this reality that I am thankful that my faith is not dependent on my knowledge; it's not dependent on me at all. All I need to do is recognize that Christ is enough, has done all that is required and allow that to direct my life. In Christ, I place my faith, my hope, my life, my all.


Saturday, February 26th

226) A second car- As if owning one vehicle is not blessing enough, we own two. For many couples it seems like a necessity, and I am certain most of the time, we view it the same way. The reality is we are blessed to have the second car. It makes planning our days easier. Drew and I do not have to sit down the night before and map out his work schedule and my errand running for the next day. We don't have to worry about running into an emergency and finding yourself without a vehicle. And today, we were able to offer the use of the second car to my parents so they could spend a little extra time with my uncle and his family, instead of going home with us at our daughter's bedtime.

227) Tears- These may seem like an odd thing to call a blessing. Don't get me wrong; I have no desire to wallow in sadness. I don't enjoy the pain or the sorrow. However I also know that they are a part of this life and I am grateful that when they come there is a physical means of release for all the emotions that are building and welling up within me.


Monday, February 28th

228) Leftovers- I think leftovers get a bad rap, but I am looking forward to them this week. They are going to make my life so easy! Thanks to an abundance of leftovers after the family's visit, I don't even know if I will have to cook a dinner this week.


Tuesday, March 1st

Laundry-
It is not uncommon during prayer time for our daughter to thank God for laundry. She loves to help with the laundry. It seemed slightly odd to me at first, but then I thought about it some more and I realized just how blessed we are when it comes to laundry. I am not even sure I know where to begin. I suppose I can work backwards.

     229) I am thankful to own a washer and dryer, making laundry day so much easier and making those unexpected, immediate laundry needs so much less of a hassle.
     230) I am thankful for the invention of the electric/gas washer and dryer.  Can you imagine washing our clothes on a washing board or beating them on a rock? Just think of the time we save with our machines, whether personally owned or at a laundromat.
     231) I am thankful that we have clothes to wash. Not only has the Lord provided for our needs in this area, we have an abundance.


Wednesday, March 2nd

232) My Alma Mater- I was looking through some photos from Johnson Bible College's 2011 Homecoming and I was reminded of just how thankful I am for all that I learned while I was in school there. It has been nearly six years since I graduated from Johnson, and I would be lying if I said that I remembered all the little details I had learned nor have I ever worked in a field directly related to either of the majors I studied while at Johnson. However, the time, money and effort was well worth it. I met so many wonderful, amazing people while I was there- students, faculty and staff- and learned many important life lessons as well as so many important broader lessons from my classes that have carried me through my various jobs and my every day life. I am so grateful that I was led to Johnson ten years ago when I graduated high school, and I am thankful for all of those who have helped to see that she has continued on, steady and true to her calling, for all these years.

233) Giving second chances- I believe I have already mentioned that I am thankful for the second, third and fourth chances I have been given, but I also am thankful for those times I chose to give a second chance to someone else. The blessings go both ways.

234) A good listener- Drew is a good listener. I know that I can go to him if I need to vent, sort through my thoughts and feelings or figure out a dilemma, and typically he will listen first. I know some men like to dive right in and fix things when you come to them with a situation, but as we women know, that isn't always what we are looking for. I am very grateful that Drew is such a wonderful listener, and yet, is also so capable at moving into action when the situation calls for it.

Thursday, February 3rd

201) Garage- A garage is definitely a convenience I have not had up until the last year or so, and after this snow storm, I am reminded how often I dreamed of keeping our car tucked away inside of one. Not only does it make leaving easier after a snow or ice storm, but it also helps protect your car from things like hail. One less thing to think about or plan for in the mornings, and that sounds good to me!

202) Affirmation-  Some questions are ever present in my thoughts. They drive me forward. They motivate me and inspire me to do better tomorrow than I did today. Some days I don't hear an answer, but other days I am blessed to hear one. It's not always a yes, but when it is, oh- what a wonderful, encouraging, propelling force.

Is the face that I see in the mirror the one I want others to see?

Friday, February 4th

203) This Little Light of Mine- When you are little and have sensitive skin, wearing diapers can be less than desirable thanks to the terrible diaper rash, so it is with our daughter. We go from beautiful, clear skin to a raging, painful bottom in no time flat and there is one little girl in this household who fears diaper changes because of it. However, she loves the song "This Little Light of Mine." In fact, it is one of the few times I love it when she tells me "no!". That is pretty much how she asks to sing the song. She holds up a finger, covers it with her other hand and says "no!", just like we do in the song. We have found that although she must still deal with the incredible pain of some intense and terrible diaper rashes, she handles them ten times better if one of us is able to sing "This Little Light of Mine" with her during the whole process, and at the same time, she is taking in some great lessons.


Saturday, February 5th

204) The wait is over- My little family is together again and this time, it will stay that way for a good while. Thankfulness seems like an understatement.


205) No deployments- Drew is in the Army and in today's Army, that usually means deployment and usually more than one. However, we are in a unique situation and that hasn't been the case for us. After the few shorter periods of time that we have been apart while we have been married, I can definitely say this has been a huge blessing. I don't expect it to be that way for the duration of his Army career, but I am grateful for all the time we have with him right now.

206) Our daughter's church friends- When I was pregnant with our daughter, I watched as the little kids in the church I was attending ran around and played together. I loved to watch their camaraderie and friendships develop and hoped and prayed our child would have the same chance for friends wherever we ended up. Tonight while we were at a Super Bowl party at our church, I watched our little girl toddle around with the other kids of the church and knew she had just that. She adores the older elementary-aged girls that have befriended her and she loves to scamper after the the other children close in age to her. Tonight there was nothing sweeter than to watch two little red-haired pigtails bob and bounce their way away from me as she headed off to play with friends.


Monday, February 7th

207) Laughter- When I think back on today, I think of laughter. We laughed and laughed, and it was a good day. I mean really, just try to practice your elephant sounds without smiling and laughing- it's pretty hard.


Tuesday, February 8th

208) Little Big Planet (the video game)- I have a confession to make; I am video game- challenged. I am not saying this to be humble or anything like that; I am truly quite bad at most of today's video games. I just cannot handle more than three, maybe four, buttons and if I have to move in a 3D world, I will fail miserably because I am terrible with the joystick. I have tried to improve by spending time playing because Drew likes playing video games to relax, but nothing has helped. I always reach a certain level of expertise (which is very low) and I get no better. However Drew does like it when we play together, at least sometimes. I am sure it is nice to see that I can share his interest to some extent and enjoy spending time with him doing something he likes, and this is where Little Big Planet comes in. It is one of the few video games I can play decently, and it is one we play together.  I am glad that I have this way to relax and spend time with Drew.


Wednesday, February 9th

209) A beautiful tapestry- I believe in the Bible. I believe it is truth- every last word of it, each story and every teaching. I don't believe because archaeologists or historians have proven it to be so, but I believe because I know that the Bible is God's word and I know that God is truth and therefore God's word is truth. However I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it when the storyline that historians and archaeologists tell coincides and fits so perfectly with what we find in the Bible. It seems that so often the questions that perplex and confuse us the most about our ancient history is often due to the hand of God and His might and miraculous ways. I had a chance to see some of that happen today. It was so neat to see how sociological, economical, religious, historical and archaeological facts could all be woven together and explained when viewed in context of one Bible story. Incredible and beautiful!


Thursday, February 10th

210) Taxes are done (at least for another year)- After we enter the new year, taxes are something that is always high on my To Do list. I hate putting them off. I just want to handle our taxes and get them over with, and every year once I have them finished.... oh, what a wonderful feeling!


Friday, February 11th

211) A computer-savvy husband- When our computer is acting up or it appears we have a virus, it is nice that I can first turn to Drew, who has a fair bit of knowledge related to computers. He has generally been able to resolve most of our problems and I know he has spared me much stress and anxiety that I would have faced and experienced without him.

Tuesday, January 18th

181) Sunshine- I would probably have a hard time living in a place that was overcast or dark regularly because I do love my sunshine. There is nothing like opening the curtains and blinds and letting the sun shine in or going out and enjoying a beautiful spring day (which is hard to even imagine without sunshine). It is so wonderful to know that even when things are dreary and seem forlorn, the sun will shine again. And so it is with our eternal lives as well.... what a wonderful example of something so much greater!


Wednesday, January 19th

182) Memories- At different points today, I thought back to what I was doing four years ago. I have so many wonderful memories from the week of our wedding. Many of those memories occurred during the later hours of the night before our wedding day. I probably should have been getting my "beauty rest," but oh, I am so glad I spent that time the way I did. I love thinking back to the time spent with my family- parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins- playing cards in a hotel room, talking and just enjoying one another's company. It's even wilder to think that I then spent several hours tucked away in another room with two women who have been my dear friends talking about Drew, our upcoming marriage, and all the joys that fill ones thoughts at such a time. It was a wonderful way to spend my last night as a single girl and I have so many cherished memories from that day.


Thursday, January 20th

183) Four Years- Four wonderful years growing, learning, working, and loving together. I am so grateful for the four years we have had together; I look forward to so many more.

184) Drew- I am struggling to write this entry, not because I do not know what to say but because nothing I write completely or correctly expresses my feelings. He has truly blessed my life and I am so thankful that we are journeying through this life together. I love him so very much!

185) Growing up with a piano- I took it for granted while I had it- as I did the lessons I took from my mom and grandma- but I am thankful that my parents were willing to purchase and maintain a piano for us all those years. (And, I am blessed that my Grandma was so patient with me during those lessons because I wasn't a very faithful student.)


Saturday, January 22nd

186) God's providence- Looking back through the years, it is incredible to see how the Lord has taken care of and provided for my family and me. Things have not always been easy and we have had our struggles to face, but throughout every situation, the Lord provided what was needed. I am not solely talking about tangible items- though He has provided those as well. He has supplied my every need- giving me strength when I thought I could not continue on, comfort in times of heartache, guidance when I felt uncertain, patience for the difficult tasks, peace amidst chaos and fear, and love though I am unworthy. He knows and is orchestrating my needs and wants before I can even formulate a thought. It is so wonderful to know that the One who is watching over me can see the big picture when all I can see is one small snapshot at a time.

187) Going above and beyond-  One of the blessings that comes from moving as much as we have is that we get to meet so many wonderful people. In every town I have lived, I have been blessed with friends who have blown me away by their thoughtfulness, kindness, goodness and friendship. They have gone above and beyond, not for any honor or praise, but because it is the kind of person they are. I am blessed  by their friendships and I am encouraged to be a better person because of them.

188) Hope in the Lord- I have been thinking on hope a lot in the past few weeks. I actually wrote about it earlier in this blog, though at the time I was thankful for the bumper sticker that got me thinking. Since then, I have had some conversations that have directly or indirectly discussed hope and I have seen hope in various forms around me. Who and what do we place our hope in? I think most people recognize the amazing and wonderful power of hope- its ability to inspire, encourage and uplift our spirit, but for some people, that hope can be so very fleeting. It's all a matter of where and in what your hope is placed. Some place their hope in a human- a significant other, a politician, a well-known charitable figure, etc. Others place their hope in an event- an upcoming marriage, promotion, physical healing, or other significant life change. Others place their hope in wealth, power, prestige and/or fame. It isn't that it is bad to dream of these things, but what happens if they cannot live up to all that you hoped they would? Or what if things happen as you dreamed, but things afterwards are not any or significantly better? Did your hope fail? Or was it merely misplaced?

That is the wonderful and beautiful thing about placing your hope in the Lord. The Lord knows me better than I know myself and, although I am stained and flawed and I continue to stumble and fall, He still loves me. When He looks at me, He doesn't see those stains or sins; thanks to the blood of Christ, which has washed me clean, I am radiantly white in His eyes. I cannot think of anything else that could provide one with everlasting, blessed hope.

189) Joy- There is a joy which can transcend our current situations. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines joy as "a source or cause of delight." As such it has the ability to redefine our very moods if we are focused on the correct source.

Just look to Psalms:

Psalms 16:11 "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."

Psalms 19:7-8 "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statues of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes."

Psalms 43:4 "Then will I go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God."

Psalms 51:11-12 "Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."

Psalms 67:4 "May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations of the earth."

Psalms 92:4 "For you make me glad by your deeds, O Lord; I sing for joy at the works of your hands."

Psalms 94:19 "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul."

Psalms 119:111 "Your statues are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart."

Psalms 149:4-5 "For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation. Let the saints rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds."

What a blessing to be able to live in the joy of the Lord!


Wednesday, January 26th

190) Peace- Much about this life is chaotic, uncertain and even terrifying. I know I would not make it through a day with a shred of my sanity if it were not for a peace which is above all that is around me. Don't get me wrong. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, pretending to say that I walk through this life always maintaining that peace which God alone provides. No, I often slip and fall on the way and give in to the uncertainty around me, but when I do, it is always the Lord who is there to help me up. It is His peace that comforts me and it is with His help that I can face tomorrow.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4: 4-7


Thursday, January 27th

191) Kissing sounds coming from the kitchen- Just a small reminder of a little girl's love for her father and confirmation for me that my little project helped her through this time.

192) Online banking- Between Drew and I, we have lived in seven locations in the past two years. That can make things like banking and the timely receival of bills most difficult. We have actually had mail that was forwarded from forwarded addresses. (Did you follow that?) Needless to say, I am very thankful for online banking. It definitely has allowed me to stay on top of our finances and the timely paying of our bills throughout all of our moves, even if I am an excel spreadsheet kind-of girl. :)


Friday, January 28th

193) A girl that can't stop giggling- I wish you all could have been flies on the wall of our car when we picked up Drew this evening. There was one little girl who just couldn't stop giggling- her happiness and joy were so irrepressible. She has been that way all evening and I wouldn't change a thing. I think it's just wonderful!


Saturday, January 29th

194) Family time- Family time has always been something held most precious in my life. My family growing up has always been very near and dear to me and my parents ensured that we were raised to value the importance of getting together. It's just not the same if someone is missing, be it a sister of mine or my brother-in-law. They are all my family, equally loved. Now I have my own little family and I understand just why my parents desired to instill that value in us. I love spending time together, just the three of us. Today has been the first time in a while and oh, what a beautiful day it was. Most of our activities may have been nothing out of the ordinary, but for me, it was pure bliss.


Sunday, January 30th

195) Stepped-on toes- Kind of sounds painful, doesn't it? And I suppose, somewhere along the way, the process may be painful, but when the Lord is the one doing the stepping, I have found that it is always a blessing. Whether my toes are being stepped on through a Scripture verse, a sermon, words from a song on the radio or some other way, I find that they are always leading me to something better when God is the one doing the directing. I know that although there may be some painful toes in the process, the end result will be well worth it.

Monday, January 31st

196) Having a big sister- My older sister has always been my best friend, but there were times that I thought she had it so much better than me. After all, she was the oldest. She got to do everything first; she always had more freedom and privileges than me, and Mom and Dad were older and wiser in their parenting by the time I hit any life event. As often is the case, things seemed greener on the other side and I often thought it would be nice to be the oldest. My thinking has definitely changed. I am so grateful that I have such a wonderful older sister that I can turn to when I am going through something new or difficult. Even if our circumstances are not exactly the same, she always has some piece of advice or personal experience that seems to help guide me as I try to make my own way as gracefully as possible.

197) My older sister- Besides being blessed having an older sibling in general- someone who has been there and is willing to help me do that, I am blessed to have the older sister that I have. She is my best friend and always has been. She is an amazing, Godly woman who truly encourages and inspires me as a wife, mother, friend and Christian.

Tuesday, February 1st

198) Guest Bedroom- I am quite excited because we are expecting a couple different sets of visitors during the next few months. It will be wonderful to see each and every one who comes, and I am excited to share a little bit of our life here in Albuquerque with them. I am also quite thankful that we can offer our visitors the use of our guest bedroom. Not only will it help to alleviate some of their travel costs, but it also allows us to spend more time together. It is a blessing to have found a house that has the space for guests to spend the night. 


Wednesday, February 2nd

199) Time outs- Our daughter needs them; I need them. There are days when we need them far more than others. Whether I am just not dealing with a situation well or I need time to sort through my thoughts, taking a "time out" can really help. I see the positive effects on our little toddler and I recall the positive effects on me. Time outs have spared me from unnecessary fights, strife and distress and that is a blessing.

200) Shelter- As many of you have also experienced, the weather lately has been quite cold and snowy around here. After spending less than thirty minutes outside with our daughter yesterday- so she could play in the snow- I realized just how much I appreciate the house we live in. It is a blessing to have such a solid and sturdy structure in which to tuck yourself away on such cold and wintry days.
